Frequently Asked Questions

What type of tests confirm pregnancy?
If you missed your period, you may be thinking it’s time for a pregnancy test. These tests work by measuring the amount of human chorionic gonadotropin (hCG) in your body, which is a hormone that gets released when your fertilized egg implants itself into your uterus. Levels of hCG can be measured using a blood or urine test.

The team can confirm a pregnancy very early on with a blood test once you have missed your period. Two to five weeks after you have missed your period, the providers at FemGYN can perform a transvaginal sonogram to check for a heartbeat. These tests can determine if you’re pregnant up to eight days after you ovulate, which means before you’ve even missed a period.

Should I be worried if I bleed during my first trimester?
Bleeding during pregnancy may alarm you, but it is actually quite common during the first trimester. To help allay your concerns, the team at FemGYN provides specialized medical care, including an onsite sonogram, to women experiencing bleeding during their first trimester. The clinic welcomes walk-ins and has extended evening and weekend hours because Dr. Guirguis and his team know that urgent medical matters can occur at any time.

What causes bleeding during the first trimester?
About 20% of women experience bleeding during their first trimester of pregnancy. Common causes include:
-
Egg implantation
-
Ectopic pregnancy
-
Miscarriage
-
Molar pregnancy
Most women who experience bleeding during pregnancy worry that they may be miscarrying. But in the large majority of cases, miscarriage isn’t the cause of your first trimester bleeding.

What is a sonogram (ultrasound)?
A sonogram, also known as an ultrasound, is a procedure that uses soundwave technology to generate images of the internal organs of your body. The provider or sonographer may use a sonogram to confirm pregnancy and test for a heartbeat if you’re experiencing first trimester bleeding.
A sonogram is very safe for both you and the baby and doesn’t require any special preparation or cause downtime after.
